George’s Wish for a Hedgehog.......We went to Disneyworld instead

George is your mild mannered teenage boy. He likes computers and BMX. However, George has a secret identity not everyone knows about, Superhero.

In the summer of 2014 George, then 7, began complaining of stomach aches. The first trip to see a doctor ended in “it’s just a stomach bug”. Little did we know, three weeks later and a trip to see his primary doctor, George would be diagnosed with cancer.

Officially, Stage 3 Anaplastic Wilm’s Tumor (kidney cancer). The tumor had completely taken over his left kidney. After 9 months of chemo, 3 weeks of radiation and one less kidney, George rang the bell signaling the end of treatment and the end of cancer, for now.

Treatment was rough on us all, making the 600 mile round trip journey every few weeks and leaving his brother and sisters behind. Thankfully the doctors and nurses at Primary Children’s Medical Center do a great job at keeping your spirits high.

We were told early on in treatment that George would be able to receive a Make-A-Wish and quite honestly a wish was the last thing on our mind, we needed George to be better. Until one day, a nurse was showing George funny videos on YouTube, one of the videos just happened to be a hedgehog eating a burrito. Right then and there George exclaimed “that’s what I want for my wish, a hedgehog!”.

The summer of 2015 we took our wish trip to Give Kids the World in Kissimmee Florida, where we enjoyed Disney World, Legoland and Universal Studios

As a family we will cherish our Make-A-Wish trip forever. Oh, by the way, when we got home, George got his hedgehog.

Currently, 11 Washington County area kids are waiting for their wish to be granted. Wishes inspire hope for a better tomorrow. Wishes provide light to families thrust into darkness.

Together, we can be the reason a local child, like George, receives their wish. Some of the wish requests your gifts will make a reality are requests for a play house, puppy, room makeover, and batting cage.

Currently, 10 St. George area kids are waiting for their wish to be granted. Wishes inspire hope for a better tomorrow. Wishes provide light to families thrust into darkness.
