In 2015, WFW co-founder, Betsy Pence was nominated as an Honoree of the W.I.S.H. Society for Make-a-Wish® Central and Western North Carolina, and tasked with raising $6,000 – the average cost of one child’s wish. In 2007 her son was granted a wish through the foundation, so she knows first-hand the difference a wish can make for a family.
To help raise money she decided to raffle off 6 bottles of Pliny the Elder from Russian River Brewing Company. She asked her friend, and fellow WFW co-founder, Justin Moore if he knew anyone who might be interested in helping her raffle off the bottles. Justin then asked Mark Iafrate, the third of the original WFW co-founders, of The Beer Exchange, if he might be interested in helping, and the rest is history.
The two met over beers and the first ever Whales for Wishes was in the works. Little did they know that single meeting would give birth to an annual event that has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Make-A-Wish, and helped grant over 8 wishes to local children to date. That first Whale for Wishes took place at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery on Sunday, July 26, 2015 and raised just over $500. Now, in it's 5th year, our goal is to raise $50,000, and we know we can do it with your help! Any donation amount will go a long way in helping us to reach our ambitious goal. Your donation is tax deductible, and can be made directly to Make-A-Wish® Central and Western NC where the funds will go directly to children in the 51 NC counties they serve.
