2019-20 Wish Your Way Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana

The Smerfs

My wife Lori and I had the privilege of attending a Make-A-Wish Gala several years ago. During the event we had a chance to meet many families and listen to what an important role ‘Wishes’ played in their child’s recovery.

There were two presentations that stood out as incredibly moving and inspirational. The first was a video-taped interview of a gentleman named Dr. Anup Patel, the Section Chief of Neurology @ Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. He is also a clinical researcher and studied the recovery of kids who received a ‘Wish’ versus those who did not.

Dr. Patel was able to provide scientific evidence proving ‘Wishes’ had a positive impact on the child’s recovery! His research showed that ‘Wish Kids’ were far less likely to: 1) End up in the ER due to complications 2) Be readmitted into the hospital and 3) To utilize additional medical resources during their recovery.

The second presentation was the highlight of the evening. Another physician, Dr. Mina Chamberlin told the story of their daughter Maya’s battle against a rare blood disease that was diagnosed when Maya was a young girl. She gave an example of how important Maya’s ‘Wish’ was in her recovery and how it provided hope for their entire family.

Dr. Chamberlin also described how thankful her family was to those who donated to fund her daughter’s ‘Wish.’

Both presenters spoke so eloquently and passionately, they motivated our family to support this great organization and help grant ‘Wishes’ to kids who need them.

These challenging times of COVID-19 have made it difficult for Make-A-Wish to conduct normal fundraising efforts, at a time when the list of kids needing ‘Wishes’ has never been greater!

As a result, several members of the Smercina Family (Dan & Lori, Justy & Nick, Ian & Nia and our wonderful grandchildren) have accepted the challenge to become ‘Wish Heroes’ and raise funds to grant ‘Wishes’ to kids throughout Ohio. We are so thankful that Make A Wish is there for any of us who may find ourselves in need of a little extra hope.

We invite you to join us in a generous contribution to Make-A-Wish and help us grant ‘Wishes’ to kids who are in need. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will go a long way in helping our local kids with a hopeful recovery.

From our family to yours, thank you for your kindness and generosity!
