Every 20 minutes, a child like Grace is diagnosed with a critical illness. Doctors and nurses agree that a wish, along with medicine, can give kids something essential – hope. That’s why our vision is to reach every eligible child. Make-A-Wish grants a wish every 34 minutes.

Looking at Grace, you’d never know she is sick. She is an energetic, sweet 13-year-old who loves school, soccer, track, and band. What most people can’t see is that Grace has cystic fibrosis; a genetic disease that causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus that clogs many organs. Bacteria grows in the mucus, leading to infections that over time become resistant to antibiotics. It is especially harmful to the lungs, pancreas, and liver, and often leads to lung failure. Grace takes numerous pills each day to slow down the progression of this disease. She also does roughly two hours of nebulizer treatments and chest physical therapy, daily to loosen the mucus in the airways to reduce the chances of lung infections.
During one of her many visits to the Iowa City Children’s Hospital, Grace met with her social worker and discussed the possibility of having a wish granted. The hour and half drive home was spent conversing about lots of potential wishes she was considering. The thought of a thrilling adventure on a tropical island was beyond her wildest dreams. Grace’s whole family is so grateful to be given this opportunity. Although her medicines and treatments will continue everyday, whether she is at home in Iowa or across the ocean, perhaps for one whole week the demanding requirements of living with cystic fibrosis may be downplayed by her incredible wish being granted.
