The Corn Dog Open started 18 years ago with a few good friends just playing some golf and cooking a few dogs after enjoying each other's company. But after that first year, founders Bernie Sigler and Jack Crook saw that this group could do some real good with a few contributions and make a difference. If nothing else, our mascot Sophie, the Original Corn Dog, should make you smile and open your wallet.
For many years, the Corn Dog was associated with the Mercer Optimists Club and raised thousands of dollars for local projects and to benefit the youth of Mercer County.
For the past nine years, the Corn Dog has operated independently; each year a worthy cause is selected and funds are distributed from the sale of hole sponsors and raffle tickets. Past recipients have been Hospice of the Shenango Valley and The Cancer Research Institute. In lean years, a white knight in the form of Ralph Yanora donated money so that we had some prizes to give away, and Ralph continues to be our most faithful sponsor. Costs are kept extremely low so that some of our returning members on fixed incomes can still enjoy the day and still manage a few raffle tickets for a good cause. In recent years, we have been fortunate to pick up other company sponsors and our fundraising goals each year increase. This year we hope again to have all teams spoken for and a full tournament, 36 teams, 144 golfers, and about a dozen cooks and volunteers.
We have decided that the contributions again this year should go to Make-A-Wish. Last year we were able, through your generous donations, to raise $40,600. Since 2014, this tournament has donated over $202,000 to Make-A-Wish! So many positive stories, such inspiration, and making lives better. We can't think of a more deserving group, and knowing all the guys and girls that come out each August, we are very sure that this year will be our best ever. We encourage each of you to make an online donation; if you are playing, please buy raffle tickets. If your company is civic minded, urge them to be a corporate sponsor. All funds raised are going to this great cause. We hope to see you on Friday August 5, 2022.
