In January 2023, Amanda was diagnosed with small-cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type (SCCOHT) which is a rare and highly aggressive ovarian malignancy. Amanda persevered through several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as underwent a stem cell transplant, however she ultimately lost her 18-month battle on May 22, 2024.
Amanda loved all things animals, outdoor, and science, so it was no surprise when the Greater Bay Area Chapter of Make-A-Wish Foundation granted Amanda a wish, she wanted to go to Hawaii. In March of 2024, Amanda, her mom, grandma, aunt, uncle, cousins (big sisters), and her niece spent six days on the island of Oahu. While we were there, Amanda snorkeled with sea turtles, saw humpback whales, swam with dolphins, went kayaking, ate her favorite food sushi (multiple times), attended a luau, enjoyed some mocktails, and even got a tattoo! Amanda said snorkeling was “the best fifteen minutes of her entire life.” Amanda was so grateful to have this experience and our family will forever cherish the memories we made in Hawaii.
Although Amanda is already dearly missed, her contagious laugh, warm smile, and endless amount of compassion she showed anyone and everyone will always live on. To honor Amanda’s memory and allow more children who are fighting critical illnesses to create amazing memories like she was able to, we are asking you to consider donating to the Greater Bay Area Chapter of Make-A-Wish.
Thank you for your support and for honoring our Amanda Marie!
With love,
The Kappenman and Carmena Families
