I am excited to take on this year’s Trailblaze Challenge. In addition to the physical challenge, I have committed myself to raising the critical funds necessary for Make-A-Wish to grant the one true wish for each eligible child with a critical illness. With your help, it’s possible.
In July 2021, just as my son was getting ready to start his sophomore year in high school, we got the news: K had Ewing's Sarcoma, a type of cancer that can affect his bones and muscles. This was supposed to be his first "normal" year of high school since COVID. He had been looking forward to joining the cross country team, and homecoming, and just being a regular teenager again. Now, with his cancer diagnosis, we had to pull him out of school. His treatment plan included two surgeries and nine months of chemo.
My heart broke just a little every time he had to go to the hospital. My first born, my heart, my baby, looked so small and pale during chemo. He got horribly sick, and there was nothing I could do but be there with him.
One of the bright points during our journey was the prospect of getting a wish granted for him. He brainstormed for hours on different ideas. Due to his love of baseball, he wished to go to the World Series. We spent the 2022 baseball season guessing at which team would get to the World Series, and what he would get to do.
Make-A-Wish provided my son the experience of a lifetime after the worst year of his life. The volunteers and staff we met made sure he had a memorable experience. He got to meet, in person, baseball players he has looked up to. Our family will be forever grateful for this time.
Did you know that Make-A-Wish grants more than 15,000 wishes nationwide every year? That’s a lot, yes. But that’s only 50% of the eligible kids. Every hour of every day, on average, three children are diagnosed with a critical illness. Every one of these kids needs a wish to give them strength and help them heal. I’m fundraising so more deserving kids and their families can know the true happiness, relief and renewal a wish can bring.
