I have heard that "the trail heals." I began this journey on Thanksgiving weekend last year. I was in real need of seeing good in the world and to be a part of something bigger than myself. I completely underestimated the way preparing and completing the Trailblaze Challenge would impact me. I was able to witness humanity at its finest.
The weekend began with an inspirational story of a young man who was at end of life and was unable to return home to a territory outside the US. So twelve of his family and friends pooled together the funds to come to be at his bedside for his final days. Make-A-Wish (MAW) got to work in making his wish come true. He could have asked for anything, and he chose to buy a present for each of the twelve that came to his bedside. Because he could not leave the hospital, the MAW angels scattered throughout San Diego and would FaceTime him when selecting the perfect item so that he could be the one that picked out the item, size, color, etc. It was personal.
MAW wrapped the gifts and got to work on the other part of his wish, which was to enjoy a meal together. The hospital made an exception for all twelve members to be present and provided a room that was set up for dinner. The young man chose In-N-Out for their special meal. And then he requested to have each person open their gift one at a time. He wanted to be sure he was able to see their joy on their faces. This will be a legacy they will have with them for the rest of their lives.
A few days later, his mother called to inform MAW that her son had died. His mom thanked MAW for everything. She shared that although she was unaware of what he had wish for prior, she could always tell when he was texting or talking to MAW because he would have a huge smile on his face. So, even his final days, he was able to experience so much joy. I imagine it being a sustaining joy and providing peace for his family.
This is the power of a wish granted. It is this power that got me through the first 14 miles when I was ready to quit. It is this power that helped me do the hardest section of the Challenge solo. It is this power that binds over 100 participants take on this challenge and become a family. It is this power that inspires volunteers to give their time and energy selflessly to make this weekend a success. It is this power that connected me to those that walked with me across the finish line. It is this power that will continue to inspire others along the way.
It is a myth that MAW is for children who are at end of life. MAW is for those children who are facing a critical illness and are in need of the power of a wish for their healing, their hope, and their joy. Thank you for helping that power grow.
If you are interested in continuing the power of wish, there are a few more ways that you can help:
