Miller's dream started with a wish list. Even as his body failed him he was able, for a morning, to consider endless possibilities at The Wishing Place. Meeting Chief Hahn of the Sacramento Police Department and becoming a police officer were his first and second wishes. In Miller's mind, it meant he could help people. It meant he would be a hero.
Chief Hahn learned of Miller's wish and within two weeks he was picked up by the Chief, given a cadet uniform and officially made a member of 19BR-1 during a day of training at the Police Academy. He ended his day circling the sky in SacPD's helicopter.
A week later, he was in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit unable to walk, his body arching and shaking. Following Neurosurgery to place a Deep Brain Stimulator to try and control his Dystonia, it was unclear that Miller would ever be stable enough to leave the PICU. Graduation with his fellow Cadets was once again an impossible dream.
In stepped Make-A-Wish, making the impossible possible. With the help of his Roseville Kaiser PICU team Make-A-Wish arranged for critical care transport to the Sacramento Police Academy 19BR-1 graduation. Getting Miller to graduation in his condition, with his continuous IV's and additional medications, was literally moving medical mountains. Make-A-Wish had the power and intention to make it happen.
Miller's relationship with the Sacramento Police Department continues to bless us daily. He spent 6 months in the PICU and following his discharge was promoted to Sergeant on his birthday. He is literally living his dream now.
For a child who’s future is incredibly uncertain the gift of now is immeasurable. Miller's wish has led to a bright and beautiful hope where there was little and created relationships and support that will last his lifetime and ours.
Johnny and I are taking on the Trailblaze Challenge as Team Miller. We are hiking 24 miles in honor of the unending courage with which Miller faces each day. We are also fundraising so that more critically ill children can experience the JOY and HOPE that Make-A-Wish brings.
We are both grateful for and humbled by donations of any amount and thank you for considering supporting us on our Trailblaze Challenge.
