Make-A-Wish Trailblaze Hike Weekend Event Update – May 12, 2023

With an unrelenting winter that has continued into May bringing rain and snow at historic levels, the Make-A-Wish team has been closely monitoring trail conditions on the Tahoe Rim Trail to evaluate its accessibility and safety ahead of its Trailblaze Challenge events in June. In spite of our best efforts to secure alternative trails, we cannot with certainty assure access and safety to a 23.2 mile trail. With the safety of our hikers in mind, we regret to share that the Trailblaze Challenge 2023 is canceled for both June 9-11 and June 23-25.

As we have worked with the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and the Lake Tahoe Basin Forestry Management Unit to secure permits and assess trail conditions for our scheduled June hike weekends, we have been advised to avoid the Tahoe Rim Trail due to expected snow conditions during the month of June. The Forestry anticipates there will still be snow in the area for both hike weekends and to protect natural resources in the area, rerouting around snowfields on the trail is not allowed. Additionally, all scheduled Make-A-Wish led training hikes will be discontinued moving forward beginning this Saturday May 13.

While we cannot sanction a Trailblaze experience, we honor and celebrate the miles and fundraising dollars raised to support life-changing wishes for children battling critical illnesses in our local communities. We can’t thank you enough for your commitment to our wish families throughout this training period. These vital funds will be proudly dedicated in support of our wish-granting mission.
