In May 2025 I will embark on the Trailblaze Challenge for my 4th time. The Make-A-Wish Trailblaze Challenge is a 27.4-mile hike from Hanging Rock to Pilot Mountain! But that's just the official part of the story. For me, this is a personal journey that has brought a sense of belonging and a chance to push myself a little farther. The first time (2018), I did the scheduled 27 miles; the second time 30 miles; in 2024 I extended it to 35 miles. On this fourth Trailblaze Challenge, my goal is to cover 40 miles on the hike day! It sounds like a lot, but its just "just another quarter mile" x 160. Each hike, I've met some amazing journey mates that have enriched my life well beyond the hike date.
As well as being an extraordinary physical test, the real challenge is to raise much-needed funds to grant the wishes of children with critical illnesses in Eastern North Carolina. Now more than ever, hope is essential. Make-A-Wish is committed to ensuring that no eligible child waits to experience the hope and joy a wish brings.
